Well, I haven't posted in a while. A long while. But, I think I'm going to get back into writing, maybe. If not for the long term, at least today.

I just read an article in the NY Times about the young and educated and how frustrated they are. I agree. I've applied to six jobs in the past 3 months. Six. I haven't heard a single thing from any of them, no rejection letter, no "thanks for applying", nothing. I'm starting to look in other fields, such as human resources, banking, politics. I can't keep waitressing. The people I work with are no better than some of the idiots I depend on for money. Some weeks, we can barely pay our bills, and I'm working 6 days a week. It feels like I put in a lot of time and a lot of money into something worthless. I'm really frustrated with where I am career-wise, and there is nothing I can do about it.

Oh, here's the article (I think it's poorly written and sound whiny): www.nytimes.com/2011/03/21/opinion/21klein.html

10:43 am - Europe
To those of you who followed me around Europe using my other LJ... I found an interesting article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/12/science/earth/12suburb.html?em

Vaubon is the "housing complex" that is being called a town or village. It was litterally 3 or 4 minutes (by tram) from downtown Freiburg. But it's pretty cool. My flat is not pictured, but many of them look similar to the buildings that were around me.

6:36 pm - plugs
Electric ones, that is. I have a yankee Candle electric scent thinger. I need the plugs to be verticle *.* like that.... all of the outlets are sideways... :-

I have two power strips, but no way to prop them up, I can't use zip cords or anything like that. Damn it!

1:36 pm - Sometimes this country makes me upset
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/28/nyregion/28school.html?pagewanted=1&ei=5087&em&en=e5c03e4512899c48&ex=1209528000

Which of the following do no belong in the group:
English, Spanish, Arabic, French, Russian, Croatian, or Chinese?

the answer: none

They are all language, they use different symbols to represent sounds and words and meanings. They do not all use Latin characters, they are all spoken in different regions throughout the world. None of them are evil, none of them "don't belong." People who claim that teaching Arabic also teaches Islam is like saying when you learn Spanish you become Catholic. When you learn a language you learn about the culture, the conflicts behind the language, the different regions it is used in, and the different contexts it can be portrayed in.

I am so disheartened by the lack of understanding and education in this country sometimes. To think of how many people are gaining college educations, how the standards of elementary and secondary education should be rising, and then to be shown how elites in education and politics treat a school trying to teach a language. Why would anyone who was not from a non-white, judeo-christian background would ever want to come here is beyond me.

Almost every American comes from multiple countries, with different ethnicities and religions, and if this was aimed at Christians or Jews, the entire country would be revolting.

I'm having a crappy RA week... or two or three...

But I did get a "check +" today in a class that I have been doing poorly in.

I'm so frustrated with some of the ways things work in administrative positions. My opportunity to supervise a new initiative got shot down. A really awesome way of incorporating a brand new idea into my building got shot down. Things that MAKE SENSE don't get pushed through. Excuses get made. Things are left on the way side.

I want something good to happen, to make me believe that what I want to do with the rest of (or at least the beginning of the rest of) my life is worth doing. I think I've lost my muse.

10:31 am - dinnerat an Italian place
So Peter came into Ithaca last night to celebrate my birthday and Valentine' Day. We go to this cute Italian restaurant a lot, the food is pretty good and the prices aren;t bad. Last night they had a huge crowd, a bunch of guys from a sport's team, so there was a 6-person table that they were going to seat two couples at. We got there first, and another couple showed up.

The guy was definately attending Cornell and I'm not sure abut the girl. She looked like she was atleast 25, and he looked around there, too. She starts talking saying she's 20, ok, right, whatever. But she starts talking about her mythology class and how her professor must be Greek or something. And the professor talks about the gods and goddesses like she still believes in them. And then they start having this rediculous conversation about how she can't believe how the professor compares Greek and Roman myths to Catholocism and how she just can't believe that. And how the flood story is definately based on the Greeks, etc etc. I wanted to both scream and laugh at them. I am in no way a religious studies major, but he atleast is supposedly going to a school much better than mine, he sounded like an idiot the entire conversation. Actually, the entire night.

7:11 pm - Berkeley, California wants their Marine Recruiters to leave...
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/02/07/berkeley.protests/index.html

Read it. What do you think about? Is it unpatriotic? Is patriotism a bad thing? Do they have every right to protest in front of their place of business? Does the government of Berkeley have every right to pass legislation supporting the protesting? Do you think that these people do not understand that due to the fact that the Marines, the Navy, the Army, and the Air Force exist that these people are allowed to protest?

I think the government should not be passing such legislation. I think Code Pink creates just as much propaganda as the government. I think these people are one of the many reasons I could never label myself as anything other than a "moderate liberal." I think that they are a disgrace to the Americans fighting overseas, to those based in firmly rooted democracies such as Germany and Japan. I think I am offended by their lack of respect towards the people who have risked and continue to risk their lives to protect the freedom of speech that these people are abusing.

So I'm back at school... training is pretty much over. I left Artemis's tank and stuff home.. it's okay I'm going home next weekend. So I had to buy him food. He's chilling in a bowl. watching lots of tv.

I slept for a really long time, I still have a cold... and I don't have my paperwork for my independent study yet, I've now contacted him twice about it.

I'm waiting to hear about a job this summer... if I don't get it, I then have to do some more research.

And I need to look into the higher education programs offered around, I may have to take the GREs... blech.

12:03 am - Some of you may find this interesting
There's this online application that you can use while in Manhattan, that allows you to travel on the "path of least surveillance". Since many many many closed circuit television cameras are in and around Manhattan, this site shows you where they all are.

Main page for the i-SEE application.

Map of Manhattan, zoom in to view streets and actual placements of cameras. Be careful it's a PDF and can take forever to load!

12:15 pm - 24 days until break!
So I finally got my professor's acceptance to have me do an independent study for the "Ottoman Empire" in which we take a two-week trip to Turkey in May!!!

Which also allows me to take 16 credits, which means I have all but TWO requirements to complete next fall. TWO! One French, and One Politics class (a 300-level political theory class)

24 days until Winter Break!! I'm so excited... 4 weeks, and 2 semesters left!

La La La... I'm actually having a decent day, all I have to do for today is read 2 more pages in a textbook, and then write a paper (and read a play in French) for tomorrow, and then I can start working on more papers and all sorts of stuff for the end of the semester...

Megan! you need to be online more!

1:54 pm - Howard Zinn
For those of you who were in "History of the Americas", which now that I think about it was only me and Jennie...

In my politics class "Ideas and Ideologies" we're listening to excerpts from Howard Zinn's book about American History.

I hate the class, but it will be interesting to see what the prof says about Zinn... what I breifly remember it was very contested in our class, and I don't think I agreed with him.

7:08 pm - New military strategy
This is actually really interesting to me. It brings anthropologists to areas where military units are in order to create a more stable and self-efficient society. There is another strategy, where military personnel walk around, unarmed unless necessary. This strategy also seems to stablize areas.

As opposed to just going in, killing all the bad guys and leaving. Then the bad guys coming back and having to do it all over again. If something can help rebuild society so that bad guys CAN"T survive... maybe we'll do some lasting good somewhere.

New pictures have been made public of the private life of the people in charge of Auschwitz. There is an article and a slide show of the pictures with an archivist talking about them. More information can be found on the website provided in both
